Let’s talk about sex, baby

It took me a long time to decide whether or not it was OK to use this 1990′s song as the title to this post, but in light of the upcoming study, I thought it would be ok . I especially thought it apt to have a perhaps taboo title after reading through the discussion questions for this week – “How can you talk about sex in a godly manner?” and “Why do you think we don’t talk about sex?”

Tommy Nelson poses this question: “Why is sex such a large part of life, yet people are afraid to talk and teach about it from God’s Word?”

Of course, we can probably attribute this dilema to the fall of man (Genesis), but are there other things within our society, or within your friendships, that discourage open, godly discussion about a subject that God intended to be so perfect and pure in its right place – mariage?

While Song of Solomon is an explicit depiction of mariage, sex, and the relationship between a husband and wife, it’s often used to describe the relationship between us and Christ. With that in mind, how secure do you feel about your relationship with Christ, and how will a secure relationship with Christ affect your future marriage or other relationships?

You might want to take a look at Song of Solomon 3:1-11 and 4:1-4 while you consider these questions .

Let’s talk about Attraction

For those who couldn’t make it to Primetime last night, we watched the first session of his series on Song of Solomon. Last night’s topic was attraction, from Song of Solomon 1:2-7.

Tommy talked about some really thought-provoking things and we had some great discussion afterwards.

Some things to ponder -

What are your non-negotiables in terms of a mate? Do you have an ideal person, and you won’t settle for anything lower? Are those traits that you are looking for character-based or based on physical things? Setting character standards helps clarify things when judging a mate (so you don’t get stuck thinking, “well, he’s not the most trustworthy person, but he sure has great eyes/hair/personality”)

What traits do you have to offer to a mate? If you were to write a personal, relationship resume for yourself, what would you include? Would you include the desirable aspects of your character? What are they?

In that same vein, a man (or woman) who does not exhibit good character while single (or dating) can’t be expected to exhibit good character when he is married. Tommy Nelson said something to the effect of (someone please update with the actual quote) “sin in the dark is always ugly.”

Decision Making

Kenji covered the initiation of the Abrahamic covenant last night (11:27-12:20). His opening question was:

”What is the best decision you have ever made?”

He then went on to describe how when we initially make decisions, we don’t always know the full implication and the extent of God’s blessing for following His will. For example, Abraham was told to leave his family and his home and follow God. When Abraham chose to follow God, he could not fathom the magnitude of God’s blessing, namely the birth of a nation, Israel. He also blessed Abraham with worldly wealth and favor among men, but that was secondary to the larger blessing.

To wrap up, we discussed how we can discern God’s will. The sources of this are: God’s Word, the Spirit’s leading, and the council of fellow believers.

In light of that,

1. What’s the best decision you ever made (aside from trusting Christ)?

2. What decisions are you currently struggling with that you need to seek wisdom?

This Wednesday at Primetime, we will be studying about the formation of the Nations. This study will conclude the first logical section of the book of Genesis, and is the last of the Four Foundations we have been studying.

A few quick questions to ponder about before the study on Wednesday:

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you are asked to tell the story of the Tower of Babel?
Who built the Tower of Babel?
What was the result of the Tower of Babel?
Why is this account of the Tower of Babel signficant?
Finally, what has your reading of Scripture taught you about the Tower of Babel? Is it different from what you knew before?

What about the fishies?

In the past two weeks of Primetime, we studied about the Flood, and Noah’s Ark. In the beginning of chapter 6, God saw the depths of man’s sin, and how there wasn’t a single thought of man untainted by sin. He chose to destroy the world through a flood, save for a single righteous man and his family.

Because of this man, Noah’s faith, not all of creation was wiped out. And through faith, Noah labored to build an ark following God’s commandment, over the course of years.

If there are any other thoughts, comments, or lingering questions about the Flood, please share them with us as comments on this post.

One person posted questions that pose a logistical paradox:
Were there dinosaurs on the Ark? If there were, wouldn’t they sink it?? Why are the dinosaurs extinct? What about fish and whales? Did Noah keep an aquarium?
